A recent study indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
