A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
