The Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
